Introduction

PART I:  HOW GULLIBLE ARE YOU?

You can't believe everything you read on the internet. It's the Wild West out there - there's good stuff, there's bad stuff, and there's downright ugly stuff. Do YOU know how to tell the difference? Really? Let's find out.

Take this Gullibility Test:

Gullibility Test

When you are finished, open your worksheet by clicking here:

Worksheet

And record your score. Be sure to save your worksheet - you will need it again.

(Your score on the Gullibility Test will not affect your grade for this assignment so be truthful! There's no shame in believing everything you hear - or read - or see on the internet, the only shame is in continuing to believe it all!)

Your First Task

PART II:  PHOTOS - REAL OR FAKED?

Okay, you just found out that maybe you don't know everything, but if there's a picture, it has to be true, right?

Take this Photo Quiz and see if you can tell if a photograph is real or if it's faked:

Photo Quiz 2

Record your score on your worksheet. Once again, your score won't affect your grade for this webquest.

Your Next Task

PART III:  WEBSITES - CAN YOU BE FOOLED?

Photographs are one thing, but you have a good eye - you can tell if a website is legitimate or not just by looking at it, right? So take a look at the websites below and record on your worksheet if they are real websites with good information or if they are hoaxes. And don't forget to write why you think so.

1. DHMO

2. Scorecard

3. CDC Office of Public Health Zombie Preparedness

4. Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus

5. Greenwood Genetic Center

6. Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency

7. Center for Skeptical Inquiry

8. Genochoice

9. Republic of Molossia

10. Republic of Macedonia

When you're finished, print out your worksheet and take it to your teacher to find out how many you got right - and how many totally fooled you!

Your Final Task

PART IV:  EVALUATE THAT WEBSITE!

So by now you should know how hard it is to figure out if you are finding good or bad information on the internet. What you need is a strategy, a plan, a tool to help you figure out what's good and what will buy you a bad grade on your next research project.

Luckily for you, we've already come up with a tool for you to use - a Website Evaluation form. Answering the questions on this form will help you to decide if a website has the information that you're looking for and if that information is the best that's out there.

First, print out two copies of the Evaluation Form:

Then go to this website:  The American Civil War Homepage

Now, evaluate this website using the Website Evaluation Form that you just printed out.

When you are finished, go to this website: Mankato, Minnesota

Evaluate this website using the second Website Evaluation Form that you printed out.

PART V:  HAND IT IN!

Hand in your two Website Evaluation Forms to your teacher! (Don't forget to put your name on them!)

YOU ARE DONE!

Conclusion

Now you know a little bit more about finding the good stuff - and avoiding the bad stuff.
Happy surfing - we'll be watching!
